Springtime Intimate Backyard Wedding, Bridgewater, NJ | Devora & Jacob

A classic Covid love-story… that’s a thing now, right? Devora & Jacob originally had their dream wedding set to take place in March until Coronavirus hit and they were forced to reschedule. The new date was set for August, which seemed like a safe bet at the time. But by May, things were looking iffy and everyone started getting nervous. With more and more restrictions in place, wedding venues not knowing when they’d be able to host again, and everything so uncertain, Devora & Jacob were nervous they’d have to postpone again. They finally said screw it. We just want to be married already. I got a call from Devora asking if I would be available the following weekend for a backyard wedding at her sister’s house and, of course, with everything else cancelled due to Covid and restrictions for photoshoots and small gatherings juuuust starting to lift, I was very available.

Still planning to have their big wedding day when it becomes safer to do so, it was important to Devora that we save any traditions for the bigger wedding day so that nothing took away from that. So we forewent any getting ready or details photos, they opted for a simple ceremony with their church’s Pastor, and brought in pizza and champagne to share with their twenty guests.

Despite the more casual tone, extremely fast planning, and all the traditions they chose to pass on, this might have been one of the most beautiful wedding ceremonies I have ever attended. Jacob teared up as he saw Devora walking down the aisle with her dad. Devora cried as she said “I do”, and the wind blew just right as they shared their first kiss. After the ceremony, while we had fun taking their portraits, Devora said to me “I’m surprised, but I still got the feeling coming down the aisle. I’m so happy.” And that right there, that’s the whole damn point.

Was it the day Devora pictured since she was a little girl? No. Was wedding planning 10x harder for this Corona-couple than a normal wedding would’ve been? Absolutely. Did all of their closest friends and family rally to support and remind them how much they’re loved? Yes! And at the end of the day, did Devora & Jacob get to go home together as husband and wife? You’re damn right they did. Love persevered. Love conquered. Love was stronger than a pandemic!

Devora & Jacob,

It would’ve been easy to get caught up in the sadness of the things that didn’t go right. And I’m sure at certain points, that might’ve gotten the better of you. But your love is stronger than this virus. It’s stronger than all the things that have ever tried to stand in your way. As I joked with you on the day of your intimate backyard wedding, this is the acoustic version of the wedding you dreamed of – the wedding you will get to have! And when that big wedding happens, you guys are going to have so much more to celebrate. But for now, you laid your priorities in front of you and had one of the most emotional and beautiful ceremonies I’ve seen. The love and sincere friendship you two have is so evident and I’m honored to have gotten to capture it. Thank you for trusting me with one of the most intimate days of your lives. You two are a joy and I’m so happy to know you.
xx Kim
